  • An inventory of historical climate data and climate projections for the Canadian North (Opens in a new Window)

    This collaborative report presents the work done by the Northern Climate Data Working Group Phase I, which was created in December 2020 by the Canadian Centre for Climate Services with researchers and scientists from a wide range of universities and organizations. The report constitutes a large inventory of datasets that can be useful for future development of climate products to support climate-change adaptation decision-making in the Canadian North. Datasets for meteorological, snow, hydrology, sea ice, and permafrost variables were analyzed for the historical period and for future projections. The main information is presented in the form of tables with links to websites and descriptive documents, many of which are attached as annexes. The Phase II of the Working Group has transformed the inventory presented in this report into an online searchable database (https://nordata.physics.utoronto.ca/en/) A PDF copy of this report is available upon request.     Canadian Cryospheric Information Network (Opens in a new Window)

    Canadian Cryospheric Information Network (CCIN) provides information on measuring, modeling, and understanding the relationships between the cryosphere and the Earth's climate system. It contains data visualizations of current and historical snow water equivalent, sea ice thickness, and current and historical lake ice cover. Historical and future data are available as point and gridded data.

    Change in Snow Depth and Snow Water Content in BC (1950-2014) (Opens in a new Window)

    The Change in Snow Depth and Snow Water Content dataset includes summaries of the change in snow depth and snow water equivalent, as well as statistical significance, from across BC for the historical period of 1950 to 2014. Data are available by station as well as by BC ecoprovince, available for download in tabular format.

    CoCoRaHS Precipitation Map (Opens in a new Window)

    Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) Mapping Canada is an interactive map that links to historical observations of precipitation, snow fall, snow fall water equivalent, snow depth, and snow depth water equivalent at various stations across North America. Users can use the interactive map to select individual station reports and data. Data is available in mapped and tabular formats.

    CSA S502:21 Managing changing snow load risks for buildings in Canada's North (Opens in a new Window)

    The objective of this Standard is to inform communities on measures for safe roof snow removal from existing buildings and for protection of building occupants and assets from overloading risks due to increasing accumulations and weights. Procedures that can reduce risks for roof and building collapses are outlined, including procedures for monitoring heavy snow and ice accumulations, safe removal of snow on roofs when needed, and for maintenance and snow removal planning.

    CSA S505:20 Techniques for considering high winds and snow drifting and their impact on northern infrastructure (Opens in a new Window)

    This standard provides guidance to northern infrastructure designers, builders, operators, and owners to address the increased risk of damage to the built environment, including the potential effects of climate change (specifically, risks from higher and more frequent wind loads and from associated snow drifting).

    Data at National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) is a large repository of datasets that describe historical cryosphere information. Datasets available include temperature, glaciers, ice sheets, permafrost, sea ice, sea moisture, and snow. Historical data are available as point and gridded data.

    Inuvialuit Settlement Region Climate Change Strategy (Opens in a new Window)

    Few places in the world are experiencing the effects of anthropogenic climate change as rapidly and intensely as the Inuvialuit Settlement Region or ISR, in the Western Arctic. Inuvialuit communities and Traditional Knowledge experts have raised deep concerns about climate change and the rapid and unfamiliar environmental transformations underway, including shifting ice freeze-up and break-up trends, plant and animal species migration, coastal erosion, permafrost degradation, flooding and health and wellness effects. The ISR Climate Change Strategy aims to address the wide-ranging issues and opportunities that Inuvialuit communities face and will continue to experience in the coming years. The strategy covers core goals and enabling actions across six thematic areas: Food and Wellness, Safety, Housing and Infrastructure, Education and Awareness, Ecosystem Health and Diversity, and Energy.

    Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning (Opens in a new Window)

    Scenarios Network for Arctic Planning (SNAP) produces downscaled, historical and projected climate data for sub-Arctic and Arctic regions of Alaska and Canada. Other project-specific data covers much larger regions. Users can search for datasets of interest using keywords and filter datasets based on relevance, name, and date last modified. Analysis tools are also available for Alaska wildfire, climate projections, climate histories, daily precipitation, extreme weather, historical sea ice, modelled sea ice coverage, and sea ice and wind interactions.
